FADO AND THE PORTUGUESE SOUL AUDITÓRIO FADO COM HISTÓRIA in all sessions MON OCT.1 - FRI NOV.30 fadoAll poetry reflects what the soul does not have. That is why the song of sad people is happy and the song of happy people is sad. Fado, however, is neither happy nor sad. It is something in between. In Sobre Portugal,1929, Fernando Pessoa Fado with History, founded in Tavira by Virgílio Lança and the sadly missed Miguel Drago, includes in its regular repertoire a couple of songs with words by Fernando Pessoa – O Fado e a Alma Portuguesa (“Fado and the Portuguese Soul”) published by Warner Music Portugal and SevenMuses Music Books, with the support of Casa Fernando Pessoa and the Museum of Fado. They are traditional Fado tunes, here using poems by Fernando Pessoa. more info: Fado com História: fadocomhistoria@gmail.com tel:966 620 877
SATURDAY AT THE BANDSTAND WITH THE TAVIRA BAND CORETO DE TAVIRA . 15h00 SAT OCT.13 3.00pm philharmonic bandAh, I want the grass and the children! I want the bandstand with the band! I want the playthings and the dances … I want to see all of them playing in a garden where it’s happening … In Poesías inéditas (1930-1935) Fernando Pessoa The Tavira Bandstand, built in Oporto by the foundry Fundição do Ouro, was shipped to Tavira to be assembled here in 1890, the year chosen by Fernando Pessoa for the birth of his heteronym Álvaro de Campos in the city. A good example of late nineteenth-century cast-iron architecture, the bandstand initially had a wooden floor, which acted as a sound box for the music performed there. The floor was replaced by cement during one of the restorations. The bandstand still occupies the nerve centre of downtown Tavira, and this concert reminds us of the year in which the city witnessed its beginning, and the many concerts that the musicians’ ancestors might have played here. more info: Banda Musical de Tavira: bandatavira@gmail.com
TANGENTIAL TO PESSOA . Cineclube Session with two films Convento do Carmo Cloisters SUN OCT.14 8.30pm cinema documental10 YEARS WITHOUT BARTOLOMEU - “BARTOLOMEU CID DOS SANTOS: “THE WASTE LAND” … the poetry of Álvaro de Campos had an enormous influence in my engravings, as much as the music of Schubert had … Bartolomeu Cid dos Santos (1931-2008) presented himself at the Atalaia Barracks in Tavira in 1958 to serve in the Army as a Trainee Officer, and he left us in 2008. His love relationship with Tavira lasted for fifty years. When retiring from the Printmaking Department of Slade School of Art in 1996 with the title of Emeritus Professor in Fine Art of the University of London and member of the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers, he opted for Tavira, instead of Sintra or London where he kept houses, to continue his artistic activity. Here he produced many works. He founded his printmaking workshop (1995), considered the most complete and well-equipped south of the Tagus, which is still fully active. He attracted important national and foreign engravers to Tavira and trained some of the most notable contemporary Portuguese engravers, leaving a profound testament to the time he spent here. Bartolomeu had a double and rare quality. In addition to being recognized as a Master of the highest competence, he was considered the most brilliant Portuguese engraving artist of his time. Ten years after his departure, it is necessary to revive his memory so that the city that Bartholomew loved so much does not allow him to be forgotten. Tavira September 10, 2018 José Delgado Martins The Tavira Film Club presents a documentary by Jorge Silva Melo about Bartolomeu Cid dos Santos that also talks about his connections to Tavira, where he spent the last years of his life creating. PÉROLAS DO GILÃO CANTAM FERNANDO PESSOA BIBLIOTECA MUNICIPAL ÁLVARO DE CAMPOS SAB NOV.10 6.30pm traditional Portuguese choral musicSaint Anthony of Lisbon Was a great preacher, But it is because of being Saint Anthony That the lasses love him. In Quadras ao Gosto Popular. Fernando Pessoa Fernando Pessoa wrote hundreds of quatrains of a kind that the Portuguese tradition dictates should be offered as gifts. Examples of this practice are the quatrains that adorn the pots of basilica, typical gifts in the celebration of St. Anthony's Day in Lisbon, or the even older tradition from the north of Portugal, where the girls reaching the age to marry, would embroyed scarves with love quatrains to offer to their beloved ones, the so-called Lenços dos Namorados, Valentine Scarves. Some scholars think that Fernando Pessoa would use these quatrains to compose a single text. In 1965 George Rudolf Lind and Jacinto do Prado Coelho made a selection that was published under the title of Quadras to the Popular Taste (quatrains in popular taste). The SOAMTT (association of lovers of music and theatre) music group Pérolas do Gilão (Pearls of the Gilão) presents a recital of traditional Portuguese folk tunes from diverse regions, settings of poems taken from Quadras ao Gosto Popular (quatrains in popular taste) by Fernando Pessoa, keeping the refrains that are characteristic of this repertoire. This the gift they bring again to the BIRTHDAY PARTY FOR ÁLVARO DE CAMPOS 2018. more info: Biblioteca Municipal Álvaro de Campos: biblioteca@cm.tavira-pt SOAMTT: soamtt@sapo.pt
