The photographer Ana Carvalho thus described the genesis of this exhibition when it was presented in Paris:

“Tudo começou com a ideia de publicar todas as semanas na nossa revista digital de divulgação de literatura lusófona Zuca-Magazine uma citação do Livro do Desassossego com uma fotografia minha. Eu ia então aos meus arquivos procurar uma imagem, mais ou menos abstrata, que traduzisse a essência da frase, mas partindo de uma realidade ficcionada. Ficção que gera ficção.

“It all started with the idea of publishing a quote from the Book of Disquiet with a photograph made by me, every week in our digital magazine Zuca-Magazine for the dissemination of Lusophone literature. I then went to my files to look for an image, more or less abstract, that would translate the essence of the sentence, but based on a fictional reality. Fiction begets fiction.

Nunca foi minha intenção ilustrar a citação, o que em muitos casos seria impossível. A certa altura pensámos em publicar um livro com esse diálogo entre imagem e palavra e foi assim que, graças ao interesse de uma editora holandesa, nasceu O relógio da alma. Aqui ficou para mim claro como uma realidade do Pessoa, muitas vezes insondável, sugeria uma realidade minha que já existia como ficção.

It was never my intention to illustrate the quote, which in many cases would be impossible. At a certain point, we thought of publishing a book with this dialogue between image and word and the book The Clock of the Soul became true, thanks to the interest of a Dutch publisher. Then it became clear to me how a reality of Pessoa, many times unfathomable, suggested a reality of mine that already existed as fiction.

Ana Carvalho (1953 – Portugal)

Licenciada em Línguas e Literaturas Modernas. Bolseira na Universidade de Leipzig, leitora de Português na Universidade Humboldt de Berlim. Cursou Fotografia Digital na Academia Fotogram Amsterdam. Exposições individuais e coletivas em Amesterdão, Bruxelas, Paris, Porto, Lisboa, etc.. Design e fotografia para a revista Zuca-Magazine. Livros de fotografia: O mundo de Lobo Antunes, MarTerraMar, O relógio da alma e as edições especiais da Zuca-Magazine: Poesia, José Saramago, etc. Fotografias para o livro Deus é brasileiro e Luz sobre Lisboa de Harrie Lemmens e para várias capas de livros.

Has a degree in Modern Languages and Literature, a scholarship at the University of Leipzig, and is a lecturer of Portuguese at the Humboldt University in Berlin. attended Digital Photography at Fotogram Amsterdam Academy. Individual and collective exhibitions in Amsterdam, Brussels, Paris, Porto, Lisbon, etc. Design and photography for Zuca-Magazine.
